Realtime traffic updates around Malta
Previously known as MRTU, Vioside has joined forces directly with Transport Malta to deliver a new traffic alert platform for commuters in Malta. This new app, TM Alert, has been built from the ground up to deliver a map that is updated in real-time with traffic conditions, accident reports, and road closure information received from Transport Malta’s systems.

TM Alert is an entirely new platform that gives commuters a real-time map showing traffic conditions, accident reports, and road closure information. The app provides a news feed with push notifications delivered in real time to commuters directly from Transport Malta. From the app, one can also toggle different features, including a map of charging stations for EV users, cycle routes, TEN-T network, and Blue Badge holder parking locations.
In addition, a commuter can use the app to report traffic or accidents in their area. This report is then reviewed by Transport Malta and published as needed. The app also provides a reference list of important phone numbers that may be needed during one’s travels.
Commissioned to Vioside //
Vioside is in direct collaboration with Transport Malta in order to provide these real-time traffic updates through an app. Having worked carefully on this with Transport Malta officials, we have built technical specs and delivered these to Transport Malta’s IT department to analyse the best approach and infrastructural solution for this project that serves all the purposes intended to be developed, and those planned for the future. We then proceeded with the design of the mobile apps, following government design and user experience guidelines. Once technical specs and designs were approved, the infrastructure setup, backend, and mobile app development took place.
Vioside has developed a backend system to allow Transport Malta officials to manage content, including reports from app users, and also send notifications to users. The backend system also fetches information directly from Transport Malta’s systems for real-time information such as road works, Blue Badge parking locations, charging stations, and more. The mobile apps then receive all the content from this backend system and show traffic information on a map through the app.
The mobile apps have been developed natively using Apple’s first-party technologies for the iOS app and Google’s technologies for the Android app. The mobile app includes a Google map which layers this information on top, and these layers can be toggled on and off as needed. In addition, a commuter can use the app to report traffic or accidents in their area, automatically using the device’s current location. The app also has push notification integration built in to receive notifications directly from Transport Malta and includes a news section within the app. Additional functionality developed includes a list of important phone numbers and settings to manage notification preferences as needed.
The mobile app is available natively for both iOS and Android and can be downloaded from the App Store and Google Play.
